Hathaway
Anne Hathaway has finally found that legit gig she’s been looking for: The Oscar nominee will topline “Twelfth Night” in Central Park this summer.
Presented as part of the Public Theater’s Shakespeare in the Park series, the Bard’s “Twelfth Night” will be helmed by Daniel Sullivan (“Proof”) in a production that bows at the Delacorte Theater in June.
Hathaway has been seen on the boards in New York in an Encores! production of “Carnival” in 2002. In recent years she’s been tipped to be circling a couple of Rialto tuners, including “Guys and Dolls” (opening this spring with another cast) and a potential revival of “Promises, Promises.”
In “Twelfth Night” the thesp will play the lead role of Viola, a shipwrecked young woman who disguises herself as a boy in the unfamiliar land of Illyria.
Production runs June 9-July 12. No other casting has been set.
Also on the 2009 bill for Shakespeare in the Park is the previously announced production of Euripedes’ tragedy “The Bacchae,” directed by JoAnne Akalaitis. Philip Glass will provide original music for the show, translated by Nicholas Rudall. Production runs Aug. 11-Sept. 6.
Operated by Off Broadway’s Public Theater, the Shakespeare in the Park program was established in 1962 and has since featured productions that have starred Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline and Al Pacino, among others. One of last year’s entries, a well-received revival of the 1960s tuner “Hair,” will have a Broadway transfer later this spring.
