The changes come weeks after December's restructuring of several major New York publishing houses.
Nonfiction division Collins will be shut down and its remaining imprints absorbed by other divisions within the General Books Group, and HarperCollins Children's Books' young adult imprint Bowen Press will close.
Among the casualties are senior VP and William Morrow publisher Lisa Gallagher and Collins prexy and publisher Steve Ross. Liate Stehlik, who oversees mass market titles from Avon and Harper, will take over Gallagher's duties.
Brian Murray, who stepped into the job of CEO after the surprising resignation of his predecessor Jane Friedman a few months ago, sent out an email to HarperCollins employees Tuesday morning. Citing the weak economy, Murray said "given the continued uncertainty in the market and soft revenues for the company, we need to take further action to align our costs with expected revenues." The long and the short of it, Murray wrote, was "a reduction in workforce."
As an additional result of the restructuring, HarperCollins Children's is moving to the main HarperCollins offices at 10 E. 53rd St. in order to "work more closely with our sales team and with the adult side of the business," according to another email from HarperCollins Children's prexy and publisher Susan Katz.
