Network re-ups hit show for second season

'The Secret Life of an American Teenager'

ABC Family's hit series 'The Secret Life of the American Teenager' has been reupped for a second season.

ABC Family has reupped its hit series “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” for a second season.

The cabler has ordered 24 additional episodes of “Teenager,” which launched last year to the network’s highest-ever premiere numbers and trounced broadcast network competition including CW’s “Gossip Girl” on numerous occasions.

ABC Family is planning to run the second campaign of the series over the summer.

The ABC Family-produced original drama is exec produced by Brenda Hampton (“7th Heaven”), and stars Shailene Woodley (“The OC”) as a high schooler dealing with complex relationship issues including teen pregnancy. Molly Ringwald plays her mom.

The series is currently in the second half of its 23-episode first season. The current campaign ends March 23.

Inspired by the “Teenager’s” exceptionally strong perf among girls and young women -- it ranks as one of the top programs on all of TV among females 12-34, averaging 2.1 million viewers in that demo -- ABC Family has recently greenlit several femme-targeted series.
