Atlanta's Alliance Theater has received a $1.1 million grant from the U.S. Dept. of Education's Office of Innovation and Improvement.
Coin, handed out through the Arts in Education Model Development and Dissemination program, will go toward introducing theater to students who are learning English, as well as toward boosting their verbal communication skills.
Money will be doled out over four years in annual increments of $275,000.
Aim is to develop an educational model that can be replicated in other areas around the country.
The pilot project teams the Alliance's Wolf Trap Program, Georgia State U. and schools in Fulton County, Georgia. Initiative is estimated to serve about 1,500 kindergarteners in 24 classrooms.
