LONDON — Pinewood Shepperton, Europe’s leading studios group, will receive the award for outstanding British contribution to cinema at the British Academy Film Awards ceremony at London’s Royal Opera House on Sunday.

The studios, which are used by big-budget international productions and local pics, are perhaps best known as home to iconic Brit superspy franchise Bond: 20 of the 22 007 pics, including “Casino Royale” and “Quantum of Solace,” used the studios.

Over the past 75 years, Shepperton Studios and Pinewood Studios have housed classics including “The Third Man,” “Superman,” “Alien,” “The Shining” and “Gandhi.” Today, the studios boast 34 stages including Europe’s biggest sound stage and an underwater filming stage.

“Pinewood and Shepperton Studios have been at the creative heart of British filmmaking for over 70 years,” said Finola Dwyer, chair of BAFTA’s film committee. “This award recognizes the role they have played in bringing to life some of the most memorable and iconic images in cinema history.”

Awarded annually, the award was introduced in 1978 and is presented in honor of Michael Balcon.

Previous winners include Mike Leigh, Kenneth Branagh, Derek Jarman and Channel Four Films.
