Costas, who hosted NBC's Super Bowl XLIII coverage earlier this week, has sealed a multiyear deal with MLB -- which will now be his exclusive cable home. Deal doesn't affect his relationship with NBC, where Costas hosts the Peacock's Olympics and NFL coverage.
At MLB, Costas will handle lead play-by-play commentary for some of the channel's 26 live regular-season games. He'll also host original programming including the new interview series "MLB Network Studio 42 With Bob Costas."
"In addition to being one of the preeminent sports broadcasters of his generation, Bob also cares very deeply about the game of baseball," said baseball commissioner Bud Selig.
Costas will interview L.A. Dodgers manager Joe Torre for Thursday's bow of "Studio 42." Costas has already been seen on the net, having appeared on MLB's Jan. 1 opening telecast.
At HBO, Costas hosted "On the Record" (later renamed "Costas Now") and "Inside the NFL" before the latter franchise moved to Showtime.
"Bob Costas was a terrific addition when he joined HBO Sports eight years ago, providing us with a distinct and unique presence," said HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg. "Television is about change, and we respect Bob's decision to move to the MLB Network."
