'Inishmaan' extends run

Talk of Broadway transfer continues

The Atlantic Theater Company's hit staging of Martin McDonagh's "The Cripple of Inishmaan" has announced another two-week extension, while talk of a Broadway transfer continues.

Originally scheduled through Feb. 1, the co-production between the Atlantic and Galway-based theater company Druid will now play through March 15. Directed by Tony-winner Garry Hynes, the black comedy takes place on one of the Aran Islands, chronicling events around the filming and subsequent screening of Robert Flaherty's milestone 1934 documentary, "Man of Aran."

The reputation of McDonagh's play in New York had been tarnished by Jerry Zaks' poorly received 1998 production for the Public Theater. But critical response to Hynes' staging, in particular for its superlative ensemble of Irish actors, has sparked buzz about a possible Rialto berth since the play opened at the Atlantic Dec. 21.

Insiders say theater availability is the main uncertainty delaying transfer plans, with a dense schedule of openings through March and April keeping most of the Rialto real estate occupied.

The Atlantic has previously transferred two McDonagh productions to Broadway: "The Beauty Queen of Leenane" and "The Lieutenant of Inishmore."
