440 Studios finishes makeover

Renovations cost $1.2 million

Playwrights Horizons has finished renovations of 440 Studios, the two-floor rehearsal space complex in downtown Manhattan.

The studios take up the third and fourth floor of the Playwrights Horizons Theater School, with rehearsal space often rented out to other local companies.

The $1.2 million rehab focused on the third floor of the building and included soundproofing, new walls and floors, widened hallways and a climate-control system. Gut renovation was funded in large part by the city and state.

Eight rehearsal studios occupy the floor along with a 68-seat theater, now renamed the Robert Moss Theater after the founder of Playwrights Horizons.
