BAFTA unveils foreign film shortlist

Nominations include two animated films

German terrorist thriller “The Baader Meinhof Complex,” Italian mafia drama “Gomorrah,” French family drama “I’ve Loved You So Long” and animated pics “Persepolis” (France) and “Waltz With Bashir” (Israel, France, Germany) will vie for foreign pic laurels at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards.

BAFTA announced the shortlist on Wednesday, a day after it sent members the longlists to vote on in other categories (Daily Variety, Jan. 6).

Chapter voting was introduced for the foreign-language award last year. The chapter is comprised of voting members with expertise in a specific area of the film industry.

“This voting chapter has doubled in size since last year,” said Finola Dwyer, chair of BAFTA’s film committee, “reflecting the huge enthusiasm for world cinema among BAFTA members.”

The full list of nominations for the awards will be unveiled Jan. 15. The awards ceremony takes place Feb. 8 at London’s Royal Opera House.
