Sources within the BBC said van Zwanenberg's departure was "entirely voluntary" and "not about reducing headcount" in the Hong Kong office, although others point to a forthcoming reweighting to Singapore of the BBC's personnel in Asia.
The BBC is also seeking a replacement for its regional head, Singapore-based Christine Leo-McKerrow, BBC Worldwide Channels Asia senior VP, who announced her departure in late November. A replacement for van Zwanenberg will likely be appointed in early 2009.
"After 15 rewarding years in program development, distribution and strategic relations in both London and (for the last eight years) in Hong Kong, I am taking a short break in Europe. After the Chinese New Year in Singapore, I will be back in Hong Kong to explore new opportunities," van Zwanenberg said in an email sent to business contacts.
During his 15 years with the corporation, van Zwanenberg managed the distribution business for BBC World News in East Asia as well as BBC Worldwide's channels in Greater and Indo China.
