Starting in March the former Republican senator from Tennessee will be filling the syndie slot about to be vacated by Fox News pundit Bill O'Reilly, radio distrib Westwood One said Monday.
"The Fred Thompson Show" will originate from Westwood One's Washington studio and air live from noon to 2 p.m. ET. Westwood One prexy Gary Schonfeld cited Thompson's "unique set of qualifications" for the role of radio yakker.
A former federal prosecutor, Thompson has had a political career that's included serving as minority counsel during the 1973 Watergate hearings and serving as senator from 1994-2002. He's best known as a thesp for his 2002-07 stint as district attorney Arthur Branch on "Law and Order" and its spinoffs.
Thompson's new gig comes as political talkradio, largely dominated by conservative commentators, is readying itself for the Obama Democratic administration. In recent months, talkradio heavyweights Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham and Michael Savage have all inked long-term contract renewals.
