Cooper portrays Hippolytus in Jean Racine’s 1677 play, based on the Greek myth about a queen (Mirren) in love with her stepson (Cooper).
Cooper (“The Duchess,” “Mamma Mia!”) returns to the National after stints in shows including “His Dark Materials” and “The History Boys.” Both were helmed by National a.d. Nicholas Hytner, who directs “Phedre.”
Production, also starring Margaret Tyzack, bows in June at the Lyttleton Theater, with exact dates to be determined.
