Fox picks up Ryan Murphy comedy
Hour-long 'Glee' to air sometime this Spring

Net hopes to schedule the show -- which is set in the world of high school glee clubs -- as soon as this spring, in order to take advantage of the "American Idol" juggernaut.
Fox showed interest early on in "Glee," giving the project a pilot commitment -- as well as an order for four additional scripts -- in July. "Glee" stood out to Fox Entertainment prexy Kevin Reilly and chairman Peter Liguori during Fox's recent screening of four pilots in contention.
"Like anything Ryan does, it's got creative ambition," Reilly said. "I saw the same look in his eyes that I saw when he pitched 'Nip/Tuck' (at FX). It takes some tonal chances, and should generate a tremendous amount of buzz and interest."
Twentieth Century Fox TV is behind the show; Murphy wrote the pilot with Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan. "Glee" centers on a Spanish teacher (Matthew Morrison) who's tapped to coach the school's lackluster glee club.
"It's a comedy, it's a soap opera, it's a musical," Reilly said. "It's not a soft show. It's got the trademark Ryan Murphy story turns and offbeat characters."
Show will include a handful of popular tunes performed onstage by the choir.
Murphy directed the pilot and will exec produce with Falchuk.
As for the other projects screened by Fox, comedy "Boldly Going Nowhere" is still in contention, but a final decision probably won't be made until January. Net also is still mulling the fate of sci-fi drama "Virtuality" and laffer "The Emancipation of Ernesto."
