'Gypsy' to shutter on Broadway

Despite previously announcing the show would close March 1, eliminating the need to find a replacement for Tony-winning star Patti LuPone when she was due to exit the production, "Gypsy" will now shutter Jan. 11.
The move by producers provides further evidence of the impact on Broadway of the current economic turmoil. Closing notices are stacking up for January and a number of theaters are looking likely to remain vacant at least through the traditionally tough winter months and perhaps into the spring.
Among shows that have already announced plans to shutter immediately after the holidays are "Monty Python's Spamalot," "Hairspray," "Spring Awakening," "Young Frankenstein," "Boeing-Boeing," "Grease" and "13." Others looking shaky include "Avenue Q," "August: Osage County" and "Equus."
A number of shows announced to come in this season also have pulled the plug due to the daunting economy, most recently "Vanities, A New Musical."
When it closes at the St. James Theater, "Gypsy" will have played 332 performances and 27 previews. In addition to winning actress honors for LuPone at this year's Tony Awards, Arthur Laurents' revival won featured thesp nods for Laura Benanti and Boyd Gaines.
Producer Roger Berlind cited the "uncertain financial times" as the reason he and his partners made the difficult decision to advance the show's closing date.
