Ron Howard, 'Frost/Nixon'

Veteran able to adjust strategy to every scenario

Starting out as a young recruit who attended boot camp under Roger Corman ("Grand Theft Auto") and working his way up the studio ranks into light comedy ("Night Shift"), romance ("Splash") and family fare ("Parenthood"), Ron Howard has been able to adjust his strategy to suit virtually every scenario.

His fellow DGA platoon members acknowledged his battlefield exploits on "Cocoon" with a nomination before decorating him for such efforts as "Apollo 13" and "A Beautiful Mind," the latter film also having earned him the equivalent of the Medal of Honor: an Oscar.

With "Frost/Nixon," Howard wages a battle of wits between a cavalier talkshow host and a disgraced ex-president who is scarred by a war he inherited and determined to reclaim his honor. Playwright-scenarist Peter Morgan ("The Queen") provides ample support.

Trophies: Oscar; 2 DGA Awards
