Fuel

Eye on the Oscars: Documentaries

COUNTRY: U.S.

DIRECTOR: Josh Tickell, an environmental activist, arrived fresh into the filmmaking game armed with 11 years' experience in the alternative energy field.

SUBJECT: One man tries to wean the country off oil and improve the environment.

FINANCING: Budget of approximately $1.5 million was mostly self-financed with the help of a small investment and various donations and green sponsors.

DISTRIB: Originally titled "Fields of Fuel," doc had its preem at Sundance and will be theatrically released during the first quarter of 2009 via Intention Media.

HELMER COMMENTS: "I felt that it wasn't finished, so me and my team literally shot almost half of the movie after Sundance," Tickell says. "At Sundance it was a movie about biofuels, but after the festival there was a media backlash against biofuels. So we didn't feel that it was responsible to have a film that didn't address the pros and the cons of that energy. We ended up adding Robert Kennedy Jr., Richard Branson, Sheryl Crow and a whole new section at the end of the film that explores which forms of green energy are viable and can be put into a community."
