The story quickly spread across the blogosphere as well as various newspapers' sites. A Peacock spokesman had no comment on the story.
Speculation has been rampant since Election Day as to who would take the prestigious gig after Tom Brokaw concludes his fill-in stint in the wake of the 58-year-old Russert's death in June from a heart attack.
Gregory, 38, is among the leading candidates to succeed Russert. Also mentioned are NBC analyst Andrea Mitchell, PBS News Hour anchor Gwen Ifill and, at somewhat longer odds, former "Nightline" host Ted Koppel.
Gregory has been NBC News' chief White House correspondent and hosts the MSNBC show "1600 Pennsylvania Ave." He also anchored MSNBC's fall election coverage.
