Gwon wins Ebb Award

Composer nabs songwriting honor

Composer-lyricist Adam Gwon has picked up the fourth annual Fred Ebb Award for musical theater songwriting.

Named after the late lyricist Ebb (“Cabaret,” “Chicago”), the award comes with a $50,000 cash prize.

Gwon’s resume includes the musical “Ordinary Days,” which has been seen regionally and in the U.K. as well as in the 2008 National Alliance for Musical Theater fest. He’s also penned tuner versions of “Bernice Bobs Her Hair” and “Ethan Frome.”

The NYU Tisch School of the Arts grad is at work on commissions from Broadway Across America and the Signature Theater in Arlington, Va.

Selection panel for the Ebb kudo included lyricist Sheldon Harnick (“Fiddler on the Roof”) and thesp Marin Mazzie, among others.

Director-choreographer Susan Stroman will present the award to Gwon at a cocktail reception today. Laurel is presented by the Fred Ebb Foundation in association with the Roundabout Theater Company.
