“Tony Manero” scooped best pic and actor for Alfredo Castro’s perf as a petty criminal who becomes a manic Manero imitator. Pic is Chile’s foreign-language Oscar contender.
U.S. helmer Sean Baker’s “Prince of Broadway,” an immigration drama set in lower Manhattan, took the special jury award, following nods at the Los Angeles Film Festival and in Locarno this year.
The actress prize went to Gallic thesp Emmanuelle Devos for her role in Belgian relationship drama “Unspoken” in which Devos plays the disoriented parent of a missing girl.
Fest dedicated to international indie fare saw a 25% rise in paying public for this second edition under helmer-thesp Moretti. After initially coming under fire from local journos for a lack of Italo pics in competish, Moretti won almost unanimous praise this year.
Guests included Oliver Stone, whose biopic “W.” about George W. Bush opened Turin out-of-competish, and Roman Polanski, who was feted with a retro and an onstage conversation with Moretti.
In Turin “W.” was acquired for Italo distribution by local outfit Dall’Angelo Pictures, which inked a deal with QED Intl.
Moretti took the helm of the event two years ago to salvage it from the blow of competition from the new Rome fest. He is expected to stay on board, though he said Saturday he will reach a decision in coming weeks.
