Studios file legal action in Australia

Claim iiNet infringed on copyrights

Universal, Warner Bros., Paramount, Disney and Fox are among the companies that filed a legal action Down Under on Thursday alleging that local Internet service provider iiNet infringed copyrights by not preventing users from sending pirated material via its service.

Australian Federation Against Copyright Theft exec director Adrianne Pecotic said Thursday’s action was necessary because the ISP ignored repeated notices identifying thousands of illegal file transfers of pics including “Happy Feet” and “I Am Legend.”

The action was filed in the Federal Court of Australia. The proceedings will be back before the court on Dec. 17.
