Sony cues up international unit

New VP Tony Ishizuka to manage division

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has created a new business unit devoted to producing and acquiring international properties for worldwide distribution.

The division tapped Tony Ishizuka as VP to manage the unit, dubbed Intl. Product Expansion Group. The exec will identify foreign projects for financing and distribution, and report to T. Paul Miller, senior VP of international for home entertainment.

Maxwell Mattord will join Ishikuza as director in the unit.

Miller said Sony's goal is to recoup its investment in each project in the country in which it was produced or acquired. The unit will then assess each title's prospects for distribution on home entertainment in other markets.

The group has inked deals to distribute four anime series produced by Madhouse, featuring Marvel characters. These series will be broadcast in Japan on the Animax TV network and are to be distributed worldwide by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.
