Barack Obama's transition team announced Friday that the president-elect will begin over the weekend to tape the weekly Democratic address to the nation for YouTube as well as for the customary radio outlet. And he plans to keep doing so.
"President-elect Obama will continue to record and make available the Democratic radio addresses on video when he is in the White House," a transition team member said in a statement. "No president-elect or president has ever turned the radio address into a multimedia opportunity before. This is just one of many ways that President-elect Obama will communicate directly with the American people and make the White House and the political process more transparent."
The videos should post every Saturday.
YouTubers can also look forward to seeing video interviews and Q&As of transition leaders as well as with policy experts who will be part of the Obama White House, the announcement said.
More online initiatives may be in the offing.
"The Obama team has written the playbook on how to use YouTube for political campaigns," Steve Grove, head of news and politics at YouTube, told the Washington Post. "Not only have they achieved impressive mass -- uploading over 1,800 videos that have been viewed over 110 million times total -- but they've also used video to cultivate a sense of community amongst supporters. Obama told us in a YouTube interview last year that he plans to have 'fireside chats' on video, and we expect his administration will launch a White House YouTube channel very soon after taking office."
