The Western is co-written and directed by Boya owner and film director Fernando Spiner ("Goodbye Dear Moon"), adapting a short story of the same title by Antonio di Benedetto. Santiago Hadida and Javier Diment co-write. Pablo Cedron ("The Appeared") will play the titular character and Alex Angulo ("The Day of the Beast") a priest.
Shooting will begin in April.
According to producer Eduardo Carneros of KV Entertainment, "Aballay" will be heavily backed by Argentina's Incaa Film Institute as part of the country's 200th-anni independence celebrations in 2010.
As in other recent additions to the oater oeuvre (think Kim Ji-Woon's "The Good the Bad the Weird), "Aballay" brings a distinctive dose of local color.
Its background is the world of 19th century Argentine cowboys -- gauchos -- who herded cattle across the vast Pampa grasslands and scrub desert.
