Huelva highlights

IN COMPETITION

"Dog Eat Dog," from first-timer Carlos Moreno. Gangland drug thriller is Colombia's foreign-language Oscar candidate.  Preemed at Sundance.

World premiere of the sole Spanish-made Competition player, "Esperpentos," from vet Jose Luis Garcia Sanchez, written by Sanchez and Rafael Azcona.

"Lluvia," a well-reviewed romance from Argentina's Paula Hernandez.

"December," the helming debut of Brazilian thesp Selton Mello. Multiprized at Brazil's Paulinia fest.

"Polvo nuestro que estas en los cielos" by Uruguayan Beatriz Florez Silva, whose "Tricky Life" took best film kudos at Huelva in 2001. A "1900"-ish approach to recent Uruguay history.

Chilean Andres Wood's "La buena vida," a crisscrosser about humble people in the pursuit of their dreams in Santiago.

Highlights from the fest's main ancillary section include:

  • Daniel Burman's Argentine hit "The Empty Nest."

  • Old-age fable "The Window," by Carlos Sorin.

  • Leonardo Favio's romantic ballet musical "Aniceto."

  • Diego Fernandez Musiak's Israel-set initiaton tale "Letters for Jenny."

BRAZILIAN PANORAMA

Fest's New Brazilian Cinema showcase screens Chico Teixeira's "Alice's House," Sandra Kogut's "Mutum," Jose Padilla's "Elite Squad," Sergio Machado's "Lower City," Lucia Murat's "Almost Brothers," Marcelo Gomes' "Movies, Aspirin and Vultures" and Roberto Moreira's "Up Against Them All."
