'Tale of Two Cities' closing Sunday

Dickens adaptation couldn't gain momentum

'A Tale of Two Cities'

'A Tale of Two Cities,' the $16 million adaptation of the Charles Dickens novel, struggled to attract auds since it opened Sept. 18.

The Broadway tuner version of “A Tale of Two Cities” just couldn’t hold out for one more week on the boards, shuttering Sunday instead of on its previously announced closing date, Nov. 16.

The $16 million adaptation of the Charles Dickens novel has struggled to attract auds since it opened Sept. 18 to downbeat reviews. For the week ended Nov. 2, the production played to auds at 44% of capacity and brought in about $300,000 in ticket sales.

A rep for the show has said producers are working on plans for a future national tour.

Next up at the Al Hirschfeld Theater, where “Tale” began perfs in August, is the Rialto transfer of the Public Theater’s revival of “Hair,” kicking off previews in February.
