Local major CJ Entertainment has come aboard as co-presenter and co-producer of the $2 million tuner. The movie's original production shingle KM Culture teamed with leading theater producer Shownote to adapt the movie, which weighed in with more than 6.2 million admissions in 2006.
Story sees an overweight singer, who provides vocals for a skinny rival, go under the knife to win the heart of a handsome musicals producer they both love. Song Chang-ui ("Once Upon a Time in Seoul") takes the male lead, with Choi Sung-hee and Yoon Gong-joo in lead femme roles.
Stage version will borrow three of the movie's hit songs. American composer Tim Acito and set designer Brian Prather are attached to the musical.
As financial returns from Korean movies have waned, producers and talent have shifted their focus to the increasingly lucrative legit sector (Variety, July 18). Other movie adaptations this season include "Failan" and "The Harmonium in My Memory," which recently picked up six top prizes at the 14th Korea Musical Awards held Oct. 20.
"Beauty" runs through Feb. 1 at the Seoul venue.
