Italy’s preeminent fest dedicated to young directors and international cutting-edge fare will open Nov. 21 with Stone’s “W.” unspooling out of competish in the northern Italian city’s 18th century Teatro Regio Opera House.
At a packed presser, Moretti underlined the strong “ultra-indie” Yank presence in this year’s Turin competish section, which comprises Sundance standout “Momma’s Man,” by Azazel Jacobs; Slamdance Grand Jury prizewinner “The New Year Parade,” by Tom Quinn; and Sean Baker’s “Prince of Broadway,” which preemed at the Los Angeles Film Festival in June.
Polanski will be feted with a complete retrospective, which he personally supervised. Turin’s Polanski tribute will include a reel of his advertising spots, several films by other helmers that he acted in, including Giuseppe Tornatore’s noir “A Pure Formalita,” and Marina Zenovich’s docu “Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired,” about his 1977 statutory rape case. The Turin fest will mark the first time that Zenovich and Polanski will meet, organizers said.
Lethem, whose work has been adapted into several movies, including Michael Almereyda’s upcoming Ethan Hawke starrer “Tonight at Noon,” is serving jury duty at Turin along with U.S. helmer Dito Montiel, Russian helmer Alexey German Jr., Polish multihyphenate Jerzy Stuhr and Italo actress Alba Rohrwacher.
The Turin fest runs Nov. 21-29.
