Goldwyn picks 'American Violet'

Tim Disney directs Alfre Woodard in drama

Samuel Goldwyn Films has nabbed U.S. rights to Tim Disney's drama "American Violet," starring Alfre Woodard and newcomer Nicole Beharie.

Based on true events, pic follows a Texas mother wrongfully swept up in a drug raid. Tim Blake Nelson, Michael O'Keefe and Charles Dutton co-star. Goldwyn will release the pic in March.

"American Violet" was one of only two American titles picked for the Telluride Film Festival.

The deal was negotiated by Goldwyn Films VP of acquisitions Peter Goldwyn, and Peter Newman and M.J. Peckos for Uncommon Prods., the company of "Violet" writer Bill Haney and helmer Disney, who is the great-nephew of Walt. Uncommon is selling foreign territories at AFM.
