Swedish helmer Johan Renck's controversial drama, starring Maria Bello, Jason Patric, Rufus Sewell and Amy Brenneman, concerns a damaged, despairing housewife who turns to the Internet to find a partner to fulfill her darkest desires. Pic, based on a true story, is a debut feature for Renck, an accomplished director of commercials and musicvids (Madonna, Beyonce).
David Moore and Igor Kovacevich of Tule River Films produced. Lee Ross and Pamela Cuming scripted.
Strand had been pursuing the film since Sundance, and the deal reps one of several post-fest pickups this year.
"We were captivated by 'Downloading Nancy's' bold but honest approach to a very controversial subject. In this age of Facebook and MySpace, the film has specific relevance," said Strand co-prexy Jon Gerrans.
Strand is queuing up a platform rollout for the pic in spring 2009.
The 20-year-old distrib's recent releases include Claude Miller's "A Secret" and Fatih Akin's "The Edge of Heaven."
Deal was negotiated between Strand's Gerrans and Traction Media's Doug Stone and Maren Olson. Foreign rights are repped by Wild Bunch.
