Special exhibitions, performances, symposia and special events will take place between April 15 and June 30, 2010.
Center Theater Group, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences and the Getty Center are among the organizations that will be involved in the festival, with each providing its own unique point of view on the influences of Wagner’s art and philosophy from the 19th century to the present day.
A complete calendar of festival events will be announced in January 2010.
Ring Festival L.A. grew out of a roundtable discussion that involved leaders of several of the city’s top artistic orgs.
"We all recognized that one of the greatest strengths of the city’s cultural institutions is our distinctively Angeleno identity," said L.A. Opera general director Placido Domingo, who announced the plan Monday. "We all liked the idea of a citywide festival that would celebrate this identity through all of our world-class cultural organi-zations.
"L.A. Opera’s production of the ‘Ring’ cycle, a mammoth undertaking, will in a sense be the company’s coming-of-age celebration. But we also wanted it to become a defining moment in the cultural history of Los Angeles."
Domingo said no other opera company that has presented the ‘Ring’ has involved the major cultural institutions of a city in a 10-week festival.
