Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart will topline a Brit production of "Waiting for Godot" that will launch a U.K. tour in March ahead of an April bow at the Theater Royal Haymarket.
Blighty "Godot" begins London perfs April 30, the same night as the opening of a Gotham incarnation produced by the Roundabout Theater Company and starring Nathan Lane and Bill Irwin. Press night for the U.K. version is May 6.
Staging is helmed by Sean Mathias ("Indiscretions," "The Elephant Man"), the new artistic director of the Theater Royal Haymarket Company, which produces in partnership with Duncan C. Weldon Prods.
McKellen and Stewart have previously starred opposite each other on the bigscreen as rival mutant leaders in the "X-Men" pics. Onstage they appeared together in a Royal Shakespeare Company production of Tom Stoppard's "Every Good Boy Deserves Favour" in 1977.
Duo will play the central pair of tramps in Samuel Beckett's landmark play, which preemed in Paris in 1953. Show follows Vladimir (Stewart) and Estragon (McKellen) as they wait for someone named Godot.
Production, the first tour for the Royal Haymarket Company, will make stops in cities including Edinburgh, Newcastle and Brighton on its way to London. Perfs at the Haymarket are currently skedded to run through June 28.
