McAlpine is the first Australian to receive the ASC’s international achievement nod. He has credits on more than 50 feature films, including the Oscar-nominated "Moulin Rouge!"
"Whether he is shooting a musical, a film based on popular fairy tales, a comedy or a dark drama, his cinematography invariably transports audiences to the times and places where the stories occur," ASC prexy Daryn Okada said.
The international achievement kudo is presented each year to a cinematographer who has made significant and enduring contributions to the global art of filmmaking.
Previous recipients include Freddie Young, Walter Lassally and Giuseppe Rotunno.
McAlpine’s next skedded pic is "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," which 20th Century Fox will release on May 1.
