'Mad Men' goes out with bang

Season finale earns 1.75 million total viewers

AMC's moody period piece, "Mad Men," ended its second season in style Sunday night.

The finale notched 1.75 million total viewers for its 10 p.m. Sunday premiere airing, a big jump from its first-season curtain-closer (926,000). Its three Sunday-night airings combined for 2.9 million total viewers.

"Mad," created and exec-produced by "Sopranos" scribe Matthew Weiner, has been a critical darling, and snagged 2007's Emmy for drama, but has consistently struggled in the ratings: Prior to Sunday night, its soph season had averaged just 1.2 million total viewers.

Sunday's season-high numbers were likely helped by star Jon Hamm's guest-hosting gig on "Saturday Night Live," where he satirized the series in a couple of sketches.
