No genre or concept is out of bounds and submissions can take the form of anything from a few sentences to a finished screenplay. The winner will appeal to "intelligent, modern, metropolitan men," the magazine says. Its budget and financing will be determined after the winner is chosen.
There is a $10 fee for entries, but that includes a year's subscription.
Meistrich is best known for running Gotham distrib Shooting Gallery and DVD-by-mail service Film Movement, and producing pics like "You Can Count on Me" and "Sling Blade." He now heads Nehst Studios, an indie finance, production and distribution company founded in 2007.
"Things are getting a little stale in our industry," he said, explaining his interest in the Details venture. "It seems like the same 300 people work every year, so we're just trying to get some fresh blood." The promotion, he added, "is not a contest a la 'Project Greenlight' where we pick a winner and then people watch a trainwreck."
Details editor-in-chief Dan Peres said coverage of the winner, from script stage through production and release, was a strong possibility but not a commitment for the Conde Nast monthly.
"Magazines have begun to dabble more and more with production," Peres said. "Everyone feels like they have a great story to tell, so we wanted to give them a real chance to have it told."
