Overseas Oscar entries surge

Record amount of countries submit films

HOLLYWOOD -- A record 67 countries have submitted films for the 81st Academy Awards, Academy president Sid Ganis said Friday.

Among the foreign-language film entries are Jordan's "Captain Abu Raed," Afghanistan's "Opium War," Albania's "The Sorrow of Mrs. Schneider," Palestine's "Salt of the Sea," Bangladesh's "Aha!" and Macedonia's "I Am From Titov Veles."

Nominations for the 81st Oscars will be announced Jan. 22; the Academy Awards will be held Feb. 22 at Hollywood's Kodak Theater.
