Gary Winick to direct 'Rat Bastard'

'Bride Wars' helmer steers Summit comedy

Summit Entertainment has set Gary Winick to direct "Rat Bastard," a Heather McGowan-scripted comedy that Niels Mueller is rewriting.

Ellen Barkin and Caroline Kaplan are producing through Applehead Pictures. Shooting is skedded to begin early next year.

The title character is a conman who plots revenge when his old partner steals the loot from their latest grift and hides out by posing as a chef for a family on New York's Upper East Side.

Winick most recently wrapped "Bride Wars" and also helmed "Charlotte's Web" and "13 Going on 30." Winick, Mueller and McGowan teamed to write "Tadpole," which was Winick's breakthrough film as director.
