Word spread in journo circles on Monday that the newspaper is looking at axing another 75 editorial jobs as owner Tribune Co. continues to struggle with steep revenue declines at the Times and other Tribune papers. As with many other ad-dependent media outlets, the financial picture for Tribune papers may well take a turn for the worse on the heels of the financial market gyrations of the past few weeks.
A Times spokeswoman declined to comment on the prospect of another round of cuts in the newsroom. If implemented, the layoffs would come barely two months into the tenure of publisher Eddy Hartenstein.
Hartenstein, who is the third person to hold the publisher title at the Times since 2006, was appointed in August, weeks after the Times’ newsroom grimly endured the loss of 130 editorial positions as part of a Tribune-wide downsizing campaign.
