Broderick to star in 'Philanthropist'

Actor returns to Rialto in Roundabout revival

Matthew Broderick returns to Broadway this spring in a Roundabout Theater Company revival of Christopher Hampton's "The Philanthropist."

David Grindley ("Journey's End") will helm.

Broderick's last couple of Rialto outings have been box office bonanzas. After originating one of the leads in megahit tuner "The Producers" in 2001 (and reprising the part in 2004), he toplined (with "Producers" co-star Nathan Lane) a 2005 revival of "The Odd Couple" that was a big seller despite lackluster reviews.

In "Philanthropist," the thesp will star as a university professor who lives his life entirely removed from real-world political upheavals, including the assassination of the prime minister and his cabinet.

"Philanthropist" begins previews April 10 ahead of an April 26 opening at the American Airlines Theater.
