Mandate to develop 'Friend'

Feature is directorial debut of writer Scafaria

Mandate Pictures has signed on to develop "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World," the directorial debut of scribe Lorene Scafaria.

Project marks the second teaming for Mandate and Scafaria, who penned "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist" for the production and finance company.

Scafaria will pen and helm "Seeking a Friend," a romantic comedy that centers on one man's search for a meaningful connection amid the end times.

Mandate, the company behind films including "Juno," is looking to foster distinct voices and provide scribes with the opportunity to expand their careers as filmmakers.

"Lorene is one of the most diverse artists we have ever worked with," said Mandate prexy Nathan Kahane. "She is a storyteller, and the natural next step for her is to get behind the camera."
