Pierre Morel ("District B13") is negotiating to direct.
Relativity's Ryan Kavanaugh will produce with Original Films' Neal Moritz and Toby Jaffe.
The project is based on the novel "Firing Point," by Don Keith and George Wallace, about an American sub commander and a Navy SEAL team that must rescue the Russian president and defeat a renegade admiral who's attempting a coup.
The book is part of the package.
Script is the first by Schmidt, who submitted it under the pseudonym Ed Arnett because he didn't want it to be influenced by his primary industry job. Schmidt is a line producer and production manager whose credits include the "XXX" films, "Big Fish" and "We Were Soldiers."
Kavanaugh and Moritz last teamed on "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift," and they are partnered with Tobey Maguire on an adaptation of the graphic novel "Afterburn."
