British director Steve McQueen picked up his nomination for “Hunger,” about the IRA hunger strikes in 1981. The pic won the Camera d'Or in Cannes.
Bosnian director Aida Begic was nominated for “Snijeg” (Snow), which focuses on the few remaining inhabitants of a war-torn village. The pic won the Grand Prix in Critics’ Week at Cannes.
Turkey’s Seyfi Teoman was nommed for “Tatil Kitabi” (Summer Book), about members of a family in a provincial town trying to solve their personal crises during a long summer. Pic took the Turkish Film of the Year kudo at the Istanbul Intl. Film Festival.
Kazakh filmmaker Sergey Dvortsevoy was short-listed for “Tulpan,” about a young man who travels back to the steppe after finishing his military service. Pic got the Un Certain Regard prize at Cannes.
Nominees were picked by a committee comprising film critics Dana Linssen, Julia Teichmann and Rui Tendinha, and EFA board members Pierre-Henri Deleau and Stefan Laudyn.
The 1,800 members of the EFA will now vote for the winner, who will be announced at the 21st European Film Awards on Dec. 6 in Copenhagen.
