'Story' gangs up at Palace

'West Side' finds its turf

The upcoming Rialto revival of "West Side Story" has marked its turf at the Palace Theater, the venue soon to be vacated by "Legally Blonde."

A sizable house of almost 1,800 seats, the Palace seemed a likely candidate to host "West Side": One of the show’s producers is James L. Nederlander, prexy of the Nederlander Org, which owns the Palace.

Helmed by book writer Arthur Laurents ("Gypsy") and featuring new Spanish-language elements, the production bows in D.C. in December before beginning previews in Gotham on Feb. 23 ahead of a March 19 opening.

The 1957 tuner has a score by Leonard Bernstein with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.

Along with Nederlander, the producing team includes Kevin McCollum, Jeffrey Seller with Terry Allen Kramer, Freddy DeMann, Roy Furman, Robyn Goodman/Walter Grossman, Sandy Jacobs, Hal Luftig, Roy Miller and Broadway Across America.
