Pic follows the Muslim singer across three continents during the recording of his "Egypt" album. The disc is his first to address Islam directly, and many in Senegal consider the album blasphemous for that reason.
A mid-2009 release is planned. N'Dour (who spells his name differently than it's rendered in the title of the docu) is perhaps best known to U.S. auds for his collaborations with Peter Gabriel. He plans to tour in conjunction with the release of the film.
"Youssou sings from his heart, and hearing him combine his own music with Egyptian music is incredible," said Oscilloscope chief and Beastie Boy Adam Yauch.
Director Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi's previous pic, "A Normal Life," won the top doc prize at the 2003 Tribeca Film Festival.
