The fund, which targets independent production companies with a Western Canuck focus, was announced at the Vancouver Film and Television Forum, the Vancouver Film Festival's four-day confab, which ends on Saturday.
"We are very enthusiastic about this new fund," said John Galway, president of the Harold Greenberg Fund (HGF), which will manage the doc fund. "Documentary filmmaking has its unique challenges and methodology, and financing is often a challenge."
The HGF, which has focused on drama since its inception in 1986, is supported by Montreal-based Astral Media.
The money invested in the fund comes from residual obligations from benefits associated with Standard Radio's purchase of radio and TV stations from Telemedia in 2002 (Astral bought Standard last year).
To honor Standard's original commitment, doc projects should focus on music in some respect and have the potential for airing on multiple platforms.
The Vancouver Film Festival opens Thursday and runs to Oct. 10.
