India producer seeks Oscar berth

Ravi Rai will independently submit 'Tingya'

Marathi producer Ravi Rai has decided to independently submit his pic "Tingya" to the Acad for the Oscars' foreign-language category.

"Since the FFI (Film Federation of India) jury already chose India's official entry, I decided to take my film to the Oscars in my personal capacity," Rai told the Indo-Asian News Service.

"Tingya," directed by tyro Mangesh Hadawale, revolves around rural India's farm crisis. The Film Federation of India, which selects the country's foreign-language Oscar submission, said it lacked "technical finesse."

FFI secretary Suparn Sen said his org has no objection to "Tingya" being sent to the Oscars, but pointed out that Acad rules prevent a country from having more than one film in the foreign-language race.

"FFI selects India's official entry under 'Special Category,' as it represents the country," he said.
