The Halifax, Nova Scotia, event unspooled 254 international and Canuck features and shorts during its 10-day run that ended last weekend.
Canuck pics that world preemed a week earlier in the Toronto Film Festival shared the bulk of AFF's prizes.
"It's Not Me, I Swear," the dark 1960s suburban comedy helmed by Quebec's Philippe Falardeau ("Congorama"), nabbed best Canadian feature and actor honors for Antoine L'Ecuyer. Latter starred as a 10-year-old whose imagination and talent for mischief run rampant after his mother leaves for Greece. Seville is pic's Canuck distribber and Films Intl. is the agent.
Karen Le Blanc won actress laurels for her portrayal of a nurse drawn to a melancholy fighter (Clark Johnson) in Charles Officer's feature bow "Nurse.Fighter.Boy," a production of the Canadian Film Center. Mongrel Media is Canuck distribber, while Paris-based Rexo Films picked up world sales during Toronto.
Best Atlantic feature and original screenplay went to "Down to the Dirt," helmed by Justina Simms, who co-wrote the script with Sherry White. Pic's cxec producer Nicholas Tabarrock reports international rights were sold during Toronto to PorchLight Ent.
Montrealer Denis Villeneuve's short "Next Floor," a Cannes winner, won best Canuck short.
