Japan arrests 'Wanted' pirate

Bust could lead to 10 years in prison

TOKYO -- Police in Kyoto have charged a man with violating copyright law for illegally uploading Angelina Jolie starrer "Wanted" to the Internet using Winny P2P file-sharing software.

The bust, the first of its kind in Japan, could lead to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to ¥10 million ($96,154).

Kazushi Hirata, 33, confessed that he uploaded the film, which was probably camcorded in a U.S. theater, and added the Japanese subtitles. He is believed to be involved in the distribution of many other pirated pics.

"Wanted" was released in Japan on Saturday.

The Japan and Intl. Motion Picture Copyright Assn. (Jimca) alerted the police to illegal uploads in July. "This year, Jimca has identified more than 30 movie files that have been uploaded to Winny before their Japan release dates," said the org's exec director, Yasutaka Iiyama.
