Chinese want their 'Mummy'

'Dragon Emperor' has notched up $15 million

A strong performance during the mid-fall festival holiday propelled the third instalment of the "Mummy" franchise through the 100 million yuan ($14.6 million) threshold two weeks into its run in mainland China.

Universal's "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" had notched up a reported $15 million by the start of this week.

Two other pics released this week -- "The Flood" and "The Water Giant" -- took $1.75 million and $1.2 million respectively, according to the China Film Group.

It's a relatively slow performance for "Mummy," considering John Woo's "Red Cliff" took $15 million within four days of release, setting a new record. However, the balmy weather and post-Olympic exhaustion may be translating into lower B.O. generally.

"The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" was launched on Sept. 2 in China, a month after its U.S. release, after the censor demanded cuts that forced delays in the pic's planned release date.
