'Stop' is go for Brazil's Oscar entry

Pic world preemed in the Toronto Film Festival this month and will open the Rio Film Festival on Sept. 25.
Paramount opened the pic Sept. 12 in a single theater in Jundiai, Sao Paulo state, to fulfill the qualification criteria; it will go wide on Oct. 24.
The plot centers on street kid Sandro do Nascimento, who hijacked a bus in Rio on June 12, 2000. The dramatic hijacking was broadcast live on national TV.
"Last Stop 174" is a co-production of Moonshot, Movi&Art, Paramount Brazil, Globo Filmes and Canal Plus. Myriad Pictures has the international rights.
The Ministry of Culture appointed the commission that chose "Last Stop 174"; its selection was announced by its head, the country's audiovisual secretary Silvio Da-Rin.
Barreto's "Four Days in September" was among the five nominees for the 1997 foreign-language Oscar.
The Academy has invited 96 countries to submit films for foreign-language Oscar consideration. Deadline for submission is Oct. 1, the nominations will be announced Jan. 22, and the 81st awards ceremony takes place on Feb. 22.
