The books, set during Carrie’s high school years, will be published beginning in fall 2010 by HarperCollins Children’s Bray and Bray imprint.
With the success of the “Gossip Girl” novels and and television show, young adult books have gained increasing traction in the shrinking book biz, not to mention attention from film and TV producers. James Patterson’s “Maximum Ride” series, Jake Wizner’s “Spanking Shakespeare,” and P. C. Cast and Kristin Cast’s “House of Night” series have all sold film or TV options in the last two months.
Earlier this summer, the bigscreen version of HBO’s successful “Sex and the City” TV series defied expectations with a $55.7 million opening weekend and a $152.6 million cume, besting the conventional wisdom that femme-driven pics were doomed to less auspicious B.O.
In a statement, Bushnell said that she’s “always been interested in exploring Carrie's teenage years,” declaring that it was during high school that Carrie “began observing and commenting on the social scene.” The announcement comes less than a week before the movie’s DVD release.
Her next novel, “One Fifth Avenue,” is due out the same day, Sept. 22.
